Trump insists National Guard 'going in' to Chicago, but 'I didn't say when'

President Trump said during his Oval Office event this afternoon that he has decided to dispatch federal troops to Chicago, but has not given a specific timeline for any order.

“We’re going in,” Trump said in response to questions from reporters, adding: “I didn’t say when.”

The president has said in the past that he would prefer an invitation from Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker, who has insisted sending the National Guard to the Windy City is unnecessary and inflammatory.

“If the governor of Illinois would call up, call me up, I would love to do it.” Trump said. “Now, we’re going to do it anyway. We have the right to do it.”
