“Arizona has an open Senate seat, and since President Trump has been in the White House, we’ve figured out that we are sick and tired of scripted, professional politicians,” said Ward. “We’re looking for leaders – leaders who are open, honest, accessible, authentic – and the way we find those leaders is through debates.”
“Arizona deserves debates – you deserve debates,” added Ward. “You deserve to see us standing side by side, discussing the issues, discussing policy, and talking about things that are important to the voters of Arizona.”
In a letter to AZGOP State Chairman Jonathan Lines on Thursday, Ward urged the chairman to “use all the tools at your disposal to encourage all parties to participate in a statewide or nationally televised debate before the primary election.”
The full text of the letter can be read below.
Ward assured viewers that there is still time to set up a debate, asking them to share her video on social media with the hashtag #TimeToDebate, as well as visit her campaign website – KelliWard.com – to sign a petition letting Martha McSally and Joe Arpaio know that voters demand and deserve debates.
Earlier this year, Ward announced her proposal to hold a series of six, issue-oriented primary debates to be held across the state and hosted by newspapers, television, and radio stations in each market.
“It’s important that we respect the voters by moving the debate beyond the soundbites and inevitable television ads that dominate far too much of today’s political campaigns,” said Ward in January. “Issue-focused debates that provide voters the opportunity to ask questions, get in-depth answers on the issues of the day, and go beyond the everyday media filter to learn more about each of the candidates on stage will benefit everyone.”

Dear Chairman Lines:
With control of Congress on the line in this election, each of us have a responsibility to do all we can to ensure Republicans win the highly competitive open seats for the House of Representatives and U.S. Senate here in Arizona.
I know you and all your hard-working colleagues at the Arizona Republican Party are doing everything possible to help our Republican candidates.
Unfortunately, Republican primary voters across our state have yet to see the candidates for the open U.S. Senate seat participate in a statewide, televised debate. I’m sure you will agree that debates activate our base, provoke discussion, and help to build momentum and excitement within our party.
The Republican candidates for U.S. Senate have been approached repeatedly by Fox News Channel, which is interested in sponsoring and televising a debate nationally. I’ve accepted their offer, while Martha McSally and Joe Arpaio stubbornly refuse to debate, and consequently they are blocking our party’s opportunity to draw national attention to Arizona and our important U.S. Senate race.
I hope you will take the opportunity to use all the tools at your disposal to encourage all parties to participate in a statewide or nationally televised debate before the primary election.
My campaign team and I stand ready to assist and facilitate an agreement on debates in any way possible.
Dr. Kelli Ward
GOP Candidate for U.S. Senate (AZ)
